Velvet is the name of the shade, not the cloth. A deep plum with oxblood in it, dark enough to behave like a neutral once the lamps are on. It is the darkest of the plain shades and the one that reads most formal.
The weave is sateen-linen, so the surface stays matte and relaxed instead of shiny. It breathes well for a color this deep.
